by Brian Schorr, National Hydrogen Association

2003 was the most exciting year ever for the hydrogen industry!  Thanks in part to the President’s $1.2 billion hydrogen initiative last January, the National Hydrogen Association hosted the largest and most successful Annual Conference in its 14 years of existence.  As we Carry that momentum into 2004, I am happy to report that significant progress has been made by the Annual Conference Steering Committee and NHA staff in preparing for the 15th Annual U.S. Hydrogen Conference and Hydrogen Expo USA, to be held in Los Angeles, California, April 26-30th.

Abstracts and Conference Tracks

The NHA received a record number of abstracts this year, with over 200 submitted.  The Annual Conference Steering Committee will be reviewing the abstracts through mid-January.

The conference will have five tracks:

Once all abstracts have been reviewed, acceptance letters will be mailed out.

Keynote Speakers

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Dr. Alan Lloyd, Chairman of the California Air resources Board and Jan van Dokkum, President of UTC Power have accepted the NHA’s invitation to provide keynote addresses during the conference.  Invited speakers include Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham, and Congresswoman Jane Harman.

Sponsors and Endorsing Organizations

ChevronTexaco and South Coast Air Quality Management District have agreed to Gold level sponsorship of the Annual Conference!  The NHA is grateful for their financial support!  It is through financial contributions and sponsored programs like the Annual Conference that we have achieved such growth and recognition among the hydrogen community.  If your organization is interested in sponsoring or you would like more information about all the benefits of sponsorship, please visit the Annual Conference website at www.HydrogenConference.org or call Lara Neer, Events Manager at 202-223-5547.

Additionally, the NHA would like to recognize the following organizations for their endorsement of the conference and assistance in its promotion and structure: California Hydrogen Business Council, Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies, Clean Air Now!, Energy Independence Now, German Hydrogen Association, Hydrogen Energy Systems Society of Japan, and National Fuel Cell Research Center.  We appreciate the support and look forward to continuing our working relationship with these organizations in 2004.

First Hydrogen Infrastructure Analysis Symposium

The NHA is hosting the “First Hydrogen Infrastructure Analysis Symposium” during the Annual Conference.  The Symposium will provide a forum to present and discuss hydrogen pathway analysis with emphasis on economics, energy efficiency and emissions as well as analysis of the infrastructure transition to a hydrogen economy. It will include work supported by the Office of Hydrogen, Fuel Cells, and Infrastructure Technologies in the U.S. Department of Energy, called H2A (Hydrogen Analysis).  The H2A project is an effort to provide for hydrogen production and delivery.  The Symposium will be contained wholly within the conference and will include a plenary session and four non-concurrent breakout sessions.  Conference delegates will incur no additional costs for participating in this portion of the conference.

Hydrogen Expo USA

2004 marks the second year that the NHA will partner with member Hydrogen Expo for the exhibition portion of the conference, and the exhibitor list continues to grow.  Last year, a total of 29 organizations exhibited.  To date, 22 organizations have already signed up!  For a complete list of exhibiting organizations and an exhibit application, please visit Hydrogen Expo’s website at www.hydrogenexpo.com.
